International Baccalaureate
International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. Its original purpose was to facilitate the international mobility of students preparing for university by providing schools with a curriculum and diploma recognized by universities around the world. Since then its mission has expanded, and it now seeks to make an IB education available to students of all ages.

Information, Communication & Technology directorate

ICT is a significant support and service department for the whole of the IB. As well as providing the global office infrastructure of desktop services, finance and human resource systems, there are large elements of school and student registration, assessment, online curriculum, professional development support that are accessed and delivered using technology. The department is structured into three sections, application development, business analysis and infrastructure teams.

Application Development Team

The application development team provides a service to IB staff, schools, candidates, examiners and universities worldwide by delivering applications that enable essential business processes to be undertaken as efficiently and in as timely a manner as possible.  The team specializes in delivering and supporting quality web based applications, striving to follow industry standard best practices wherever possible.
The team uses agile development practices to accelerate the process of delivering high-quality software that is easier to implement and manage, enabling the IB to continue to meet its strategic goals.  UML is utilized as a systems analysis, design and documentation tool to complement the agile approaches used throughout the development process.

Business Analysis Team

The ICT business analysis team provides support in five areas.
Initial Investigation and/or Feasibility Study: this includes gathering information about existing processes (high-level), identifying possible solutions, stakeholder analysis, cost benefits calculations, production of business case;

User Requirements: this includes mapping existing processes (in detail), gathering information about data that is captured, stored and disseminated, gathering information about interfaces with existing systems or systems currently in development, mapping proposed processes, documenting this information in the user requirements document, UML diagrams and use cases;

Supplier Comparison: if, due to resource issues, the IB is unable to develop a solution in-house, the ICT business analysis team can also identify suppliers that meet the requirements and draw comparisons, e.g. cost;

Tendering Process: if a tendering process is undertaken, the ICT business analysis team can produce Request for Proposal (RFP) documentation, liaise with suppliers, and produce proposals and recommendations documents;

Project Management: if required, the ICT business analysis team can assist in managing the project, either as a project manager or as a member of the project team.

The Infrastructure Team

The ICT services and support section consists of three teams.

A support desk team which contributes to the operation of the ICT directorate by providing an ICT support desk service so ensuring that IB staff are able to make best use of ICT facilities provided to them, a security and systems team and database team which contribute to the operation of the ICT directorate by ensuring the provision of reliable, resilient and secure network and database services that are able to meet the IT performance and scalability demands of the IB.

This is achieved by the provision of an underlying network and database infrastructure that is maintained and updated so ensuring that it is reliable, resilient and secure and will meet the ever-growing demands placed on it by the organization’s stakeholders.
